  1. Nathan, I understand your question re: what warrants the extension of prehensive feeling beyond embodied experience.

What still troubles me is the account of how we arrived here. As your post itself records, I had already accepted a comparative burden and described my proposal as abductive on August 30 and September 5. Explicitly agreeing that D does not logically entail X is clarifying, but the repeated “finally” makes this sound like a recent change in my argument. You can form the proposition. As a formal statement, I can follow it. My dispute is whether what it is supposed to mean has any concrete content. Likewise, my September 5 restatement of your question about intrinsic character was immediately followed by an objection to that formulation. I was identifying the disagreement, not accepting its framing.

I recognize that you now describe prehension as constitutive. The later reference to “phenomenal feeling” in the Koons discussion nevertheless leaves me uncertain whether that correction has sunk in very deeply. Prehension names the relation through which an actual world becomes ingredient in a new actuality, with the subject emerging through that process. Its subjective dimension does not exhaust it, since it is just as objective as it is subjective.

I also understand that your agnosticism leaves possibilities open without asserting them. My criticism concerns possibilities you leave open. Criticizing one such alternative does not by itself settle the case against withholding judgment.

I recognize that your proofs concern what particular conclusions require, rather than claiming to resolve the whole metaphysical question. Shared operational successes cannot automatically be credited to my proposal. My positive case concerns whether prehension offers a more adequate and coherent interpretation of concrete causal inheritance. I understand that you find the comparative warrant insufficient.

The comparative gain I claim is a common account of causal efficacy and the becoming of an occasion of experience. In embodied experience, the world’s influence is constitutive. We become through receiving and integrating actual facts we do not create. Prehension generalizes that relation throughout nature. This lets us approach conscious experience as a development within the same activity that constitutes physical and biological existence. This proposal is thus doing more than accommodating scientific findings but is seeking to make our knowing and feeling continuous with the natural world under investigation. To my mind, that continuity is a strong reason for preferring the hypothesis, though its adequacy and the merits of competing explanations remain open to comparison.

    1. @Matthew David Segall , thanks for the engagement. This response is a substantial improvement in the exchange because it engages the argument I am actually making rather than reconstructing my suspension as a positive nonexperiential metaphysics.

You now address the real pressure points directly: whether D has stable content across rival ontologies, what positive work prehension adds beyond the shared causal-relational structure, and whether the Whiteheadian generalization earns its wider scope. That gives us a much cleaner disagreement to work on.

I’ve put the fuller response in a separate article because I want the corrections and the remaining disagreement to be visible rather than buried in this thread.

Two historical points can be handled quickly. I used “finally” sequentially, not to claim that your abductive framing or comparative burden first appeared on September 17, but I agree the word can suggest that, so I’m removing it where ambiguous.

On September 5, my article said you “restated my live question”; it did not say you accepted my framing, so your clarification that you were identifying the disagreement is compatible with what I wrote. Still, I do not need that comment for the provenance point. Your direct formulations that causal relation “just is felt inheritance,” that the dispute concerns “an identity claim about what concrete actuality is,” and that the choice is between “a primitive left blank” and “a primitive we directly feel from within” make the point more cleanly. I’ll use those instead.

I also accept the correction from “phenomenal feeling” wherever it suggests a detachable predicate rather than prehensive constitution.

On the substantive side, I agree that you can criticize particular alternatives left open by questionmark ?X, and defeating one should count against that rival and may increase the relative standing of X. Questionmark ?X is an epistemic status, not a competing ontology.

I also take your “concrete content” challenge seriously if you mean that some supposedly shared element of D actually loses stable content across rival ontologies. That would be a real failure of my factorization, and I bear that burden if you can demonstrate it. If instead the objection is simply that D does not supply a completed intrinsic metaphysics, I already agree. That incompleteness is what questionmark ?X records is the residual incompleteness itself. And if suspension were required to provide a complete not-X ontology before your universal X carries its own comparative burden, I think that would shift a burden my position does not assume.

The positive continuity argument is where I think the live dispute really is.

I grant that giving causal efficacy and experiential becoming a common account is a genuine candidate comparative virtue. What I do not yet think has been established is that continuity itself discriminates the Whiteheadian account from its strongest rivals. Powers accounts, neutral-process views, emergent process accounts, and physicalist approaches can each claim, in different terms, that experience develops continuously within the same natural order rather than arriving from outside it.

So the question is not merely whether Whitehead gives us continuity. It is whether interpreting that continuity specifically as universal prehensive constitution or felt inheritance explains, constrains, or unifies something the strongest rivals cannot preserve at equal or lower cost.

That is why I am still asking what warrants the bridge from embodied experience, which is a highly organized local case, to causal actuality universally.

When you say prehension makes experience continuous with “the same activity” constituting physical and biological existence, what does “same” preserve?

If it means causal inheritance and constitutive dependence, serious rivals can preserve much of that.

If it means the full objective-subjective structure of prehension, then that is the universal X whose warrant we are comparing.

So what independently favors that specifically prehensive interpretation? Which strongest rival fails where it succeeds? What explanatory burden disappears only when universal prehension is retained? And what would lower your confidence in X?

I owe you the reciprocal burden too. Questionmark ?X cannot become permanent insulation. If X repeatedly outperforms its strongest rivals on independent criteria, supplies a defensible scope bridge, removes explanatory burdens they cannot remove without greater cost, and survives serious attempts at revision, my framework requires me to update toward it.

That is the comparison I am trying to isolate, and the full post lays out exactly what I think each side still owes.
